Medigap Plan N
Plan N covers the same major gaps as Plan G — the Part A deductible, hospital coinsurance, skilled nursing — but trades a lower premium for small cost-sharing: up to $20 for some office visits, up to $50 for ER visits that don't admit you, and no coverage for Part B excess charges.
Who Plan N tends to fit
- People who don't visit the doctor often — few visits means the copays rarely add up to the premium savings.
- People in states that ban Part B excess charges, where one of Plan N's two gaps doesn't exist at all — ask your advisor whether yours is one.
- People who want Medigap's any-doctor freedom at a premium closer to a Medicare Advantage budget.
The trade-offs
- Copays are real money in a high-visit year: up to $20 per office visit and $50 per ER visit adds up for someone managing several conditions.
- Part B excess charges are yours: a doctor who doesn't accept Medicare assignment can bill up to 15% above the approved amount in most states.
- The premium gap between G and N varies a lot by state and age — do the break-even math on your own quotes, not on a national average.
