Medigap Plan F
Closed to anyone new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020
Plan F is the only plan that covers every gap in the chart — including the Part B deductible — which is exactly why it's closed: nobody new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 can buy it. If you already have it, keeping or leaving it is a real decision, not a reflex.
Who Plan F tends to fit
- People who already own Plan F and value first-dollar coverage: no deductible, no copays, nothing.
- People eligible for Medicare before 2020 who still qualify to buy it and want the fullest possible coverage.
The trade-offs
- A closed pool ages: no new healthy 65-year-olds join Plan F, which tends to push its premiums up faster than open plans over time.
- The extra benefit over Plan G is just the annual Part B deductible — when Plan F costs much more than Plan G, you may be paying a premium above the deductible it covers.
- Switching away later may require medical underwriting in most states — the decision has a one-way door in it, so make it with an advisor, not a headline.
